Types of projections based on recent pricing?

Some investors will avoid buying a company or index that has climbed too quickly because they believe it is due for a correction, while others will resist selling a stock that is sinking because they believe it will at some point, reverse and go higher. Is there any scientific evidence to back up these types of projections based on recent pricing?
